ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My interest in shipping charts was generated when I purchased a book on coastal navigation. I immediately responded to the graphic nature of the chart, which represents land and sea from an aerial perspective, defining not only what is above the surface, but also below. In this regard I consider the shipping chart as an x-ray defining what is hidden beneath the surface using graphic symbols to distinguish natural feature from hazard.

I consider these landscape paintings in that they define a land formation, albeit under water. Location is only important in that it refers to a specific land site, but the paintings are much more about an overall design than trying to be site specific. While I continue to work directly from the chart, picture-making qualities such as line and colour have become more important than remaining true to the original.
