Artist Statement
“Seven years ago I returned to the Southern Highlands of New South Wales after years away in many foreign places. Over the past three years I've been fascinated with Sacred Sites, for example, temples, mosques, and churches. I have wondered whether we all get the same messages and inspirations from a sacred place.
Could the same be said of a landscape? As familiar as I thought my childhood surroundings were it surprised me on returning how unfamiliar it felt and I looked upon it with different eyes.
Over this period I've sketched and painted the local and coastal landscapes looking hard at once known places, seeing and feeling them anew. They hold history of those that have passed through, of those that have stayed and of a time before. My landscapes have letters, words, symbols and spaces floating through them and from a different angle these reflect another aspect of the place”.
EARTH WORKS is a journey through a landscape with many signs.
