Amanda Dumas-Hernandez was born on April 1 in a place in the rural southern United States where time stood as still and straight as the painted white columns of old antebellum homes. Buckled tight, were the views and beliefs of those around, where imagination and gossip were the only entertainment. Hell, fire, brimstone, and social strata landed on everyone’s heads in the form of heated judgments—anything other than a preconceived notion was a mirage in the middle of nowhere. Amanda, the extrovertedly friendly and ambitious Southern Belle sang her own invented tune along a road where folks and folklore were indistinguishable, fitting in like a flower pressed between pages of the Bible; pretty to look at, always creating a bulge, and falling out when turned upside down. She was like Scarlett O’Hara, in a version of “Gone With the Wind” that might have been written by James Joyce. Strange situations, awkward indescribable feelings, and outlandish metaphors are part of the absurd tangled reigns that guide her work to a place where the preconceived notion is a reality in the middle of everywhere. “Amanda Dumas–Hernandez is an interdisciplinary artist who uses the practices of sculpture, painting, installation, and digital imaging in her work. She is a prissy, can–do“Belle” that jumps in and gets her hands dirty, in addition to being able to converse on absolutely any topic (with a fabulous drawl). Dumas-Hernandez earned an MFA from the NY State College of Art and Design at Alfred University, a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), and has attended the Munchen Akademie der Bildenden Künste. Amanda has exhibited throughout the United States and in Germany. She currently lives near New York City with her husband." Visit Amanda's website: www.amandadumas.com |
